Wolfsbane (Aconite: aconitum napellus)

Materia Magica

I’m currently in year one of a three year program in herbalism. As I’m studying each herb for my materia medica class, I am taking the time to draw them. As I draw them, I read about the folklore of the herb, its medical uses, and begin building my relationship with it.

Eventually, I will compile my botanical illustrations, my notes on medical uses, and the plant folklore into a Materia Magica. This page contains excerpts of my Materia Magica, and shows my progress on this project.

Wolfsbane (Aconite: aconitum napellus)

Wolfsbane (Aconite: aconitum napellus)

This herb is extremely unpredictable, and it’s impacts change significantly from harvest to harvest. This is a classic ingredient in flying ointments, and can be quite deadly. Hecate poisoned her father with Aconite. This herb will get the heart beating again after a heart attack, but the dose needs to be extremely small: a swipe of the dried root across the tongue will do.
